Wellness and Health Opportunity
Wellness and health is one of the newest and most promising global markets, with estimates placing its current worth at more than £120bn and forecasting that it will triple by 2012.
Scotland has the skills and the knowledge to exploit this market and our role is to enable SMEs to fulfil their potential.
As life expectancy rises in the developed world, so too does the demand for individuals to better manage their lifestyles and medical conditions on their own terms. The World Health Organisation, have globally estimated that there are;
- 1 billion adults overweight
- 860 million patients with long term conditions*
- 600 million people over the age of 60
*(diabetes, cardiovascular, respitory, mental, bone and joint)
Ageing populations place a heavy strain on health services and as the internet generation grows older, with its grasp of the egalitarian nature of knowledge and information and a desire for self-maintenance, the market for wellness and health products is expanding across the globe. People want to take control of their lives by adopting preventative measures and accessing therapeutic treatments to prolong independent living. While medical advances prolong the lives of sufferers of chronic conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, which require regular and constant treatment.
