Music Business Innovation
Sponsorship Packages are available for this event - contact annamarie.taylor@innovationcentre.org for details
If music is the world's number one pastime, why is it so difficult to survive as a musician today? The music industry has changed drastically in the past ten years and is still finding its feet with all the new technologies offering routes to markets and fan bases. This event will discuss and debate how musicians, labels, publishers and distributors can utilize cloud computing, social media, Digital Marketing Agencies, and Brands to spread their sound across international borders. It's not easy and it's not as lucrative as the old business model, so we will evaluate the opportunities and challenges made by these new technologies through a series of workshops preceding the main event followed by an open panel industry debate.
This event will bring together some of the leading industry speakers including Will Page @PRS for Music, Spotify and Frukt to look at the opportunities for the music sector such as cloud computing, advertising, TV and social media. Prior to the keynote speeches and general panel discussions, Music Business Innovation will facilitate four specific breakout sessions which will take the form of roundtable discussions on key industry sectors. There will be 20 seats available at each table, which may be reserved in advance via the Music Business Innovation LinkedIn group. The agenda and proposed talking points for each session will be crowd sourced in advance via Twitter. Each session will be collectively minuted via the use of unique #hashtags in Twitter and audio recorded for online archive.
The workshops will be limited in number of attendees and the themes are:
1.Cloud Computing - where are the opportunities for music?
Facilitated by Spotify
It has been predicted that your music collection will soon be housed entirely online. With increased download speeds, bandwidth capacity and online storage, there will be no need to ‘own' music - it will now be housed somewhere in ‘the cloud'. This workshop will consider what opportunities cloud computing will bring from music creators and publishers.
2. Media Users - licensing for music blogs
Radio Magnetic will host a round table discussion exploring the opportunities and challenges that present when media and music work together. Online and traditional broadcasters, publications and bloggers will come together to explore licensing issues, ecommerce and affiliate deal opportunities, syndication and digital merchandising and the changing role of music media.
3. Brands and Music
Facilitated by Frukt
The role of music within marketing has been transformed in recent years. Fast developing music technology has provided impetus and new opportunities in music for brands. This workshop will consider the increasing overlap between music and brands over the last decade and what the future holds including innovative partnerships, the thriving live music scene and how brands even now have some impact in the way musicians market themselves.
4. Monetising Communities
This workshop will look at how communities are becoming a key aspect of the music industry, but how can you make money from these communities. This workshop will be facilitated by Greg Kane, Hue & Cry who will provide his own thoughts and experience in this area.
