R&D - Maximising your tax relief entitlements
This briefing is a great opportunity to check you're getting the R&D tax relief you are entitled to. Brian Williamson of Member company Jumpstart, specialises in helping technology businesses maximise their R&D tax relief.
Highly recommended by other Members such as Euan Mackenzie CEO of 3MRT. Euan advises :
"Jumpstart were invaluable and enabled us to claim back a considerable sum in R&D tax relief which on our own we would have ignored. It made a real difference to the business."
Research and development (R&D) tax relief is intended to encourage investment in innovation, by providing tax incentives to UK businesses. It is estimated that over £500m is left unclaimed in Scotland alone.
Many companies just don’t realise they qualify, believing R&D is something associated with white coats pipettes and test tubes.
In fact, the UK Government’s definition of R&D for tax purposes is surprisingly wide. If you've made something cheaper, faster, smaller, larger or longer then it could count as R&D. Similarly, if you have duplicated a product, process or service and improved it in the process then this could also be eligible. In fact if you have even made something more attractive and as a result had a technical challenge then you could also be missing out. Many who have managed to navigate the legislation and make a claim do not claim nearly enough. It is estimated the average claim is not better than half what it should be.
