    The Alba Innovation Centre in partnership with MBM Commercial is presenting a breakfast seminar offering expert commercial legal advice to high growth innovative businesses.

     

    How do disputes happen at Board level? 

    What are the most appropriate ways to resolve these disputes?

     

    This seminar will involve a review of the cause and effect of disputes at board level with an examination of the practical and legal measures than can be taken to prevent, limit or resolve the problem.

     

    It is rare that any two situations will be the same and with a number of different factors involved, including directorship, employment, shareholding and investor relations this can result in no easy answer.

     

    Attendance at this workshop is free an will offer the companies the opportunity to acquire knowledge and information from an industry expert.

     

    Kenny Mumford, a partner from MBM Commercial will be happy to chat with the attendees of the workshops on a 1 to 1 basis after the event or at a subsequent meeting.

Therefore the Wellness and Health Innovation team have brought together some of the key players in the Wellness and Health market to meet with YOU.


    Headlining this event will be Boots Centre for Innovation, set up to work closely with early stage companies or inventors to develop pioneering products for the Wellness and Health market. Boots plan to bring more ideas to market through working in partnership with external third parties and as a result are keen to meet with Scotland’s innovative wellness and health companies.


    One of the companies Boots have already made connections with is PWB, a company which developed the Breast Light product in conjunction with Wide Blue in Scotland. Launched in June 2009, Breast Light is already the market leader and has developed its core market share overseas, rather than in the UK. PWB will share their experiences and advise on what an SME should do to launch their business in this evolving marketplace.


    The seminar will also provide useful information on the future innovation strategies of Touch Bionics, The You Company and Scottish Development International sharing insight into the International market for Wellness and Health, specifically Japan.

    Touch Bionics
    Touch Bionics is actively expanding its work in limb loss and limb impairment which embraces electromechanical engineering, controls software, human/machine interfaces for sensation and control, 3D shape acquisition and patient outcome studies. Additionally the Company is expanding its plans into other technologies and therapies that interface devices with humans (bionics) in order to leverage its growing sales channels and clinical footprint – therefore, companies wishing to scale their market reach quickly are of interest.

    The YOU Company provides cost effective health and wellness assessment service to the Occupational Health and Insurance Industries.     Japan has the world's oldest population and by 2050, 40 percent will be 65 or older and demand for medical care will triple in the next 25 years.     Who is involved with the event presentations?

    Kelvin Nanotechnology Ltd - Dr Brendan Casey
    Kelvin Nanotechnology Ltd (KNT) provide nanofabrication solutions to industry and academia delivered through the state of the art James Watt Nanofabrication Centre. With the proliferation of nanotechnology into new application spaces, the company is constantly expanding and developing its industrially facing processes and technology from textiles to food and from life sciences to engineering.

     

    Pharmacells – Athol Haas CEO & Dr Neil Fell
    Pharmacells has the exclusive rights to a patented method of harvesting and storing a special new type of adult, blood derived stem cell. Its business model consists of both consumer and commercial target markets with the creation of a private stem cell bank for the discerning individual alongside supply of its cell line into commercial projects including research and Pharmaceutical R&D.

     

    Stem cell research will lead to personalised treatments and therapies for everything from cancers to tissue repair and it is important that individuals take the time to bank their stem cells whilst healthy.


    Pharmacells was first discussed in 2006 by Dr Neil Fell and Mr Athol Haas, and together they formed their business in 2008. They’re funded by both private investment monies and Public Sector funds. Dr Fell is a medical doctor with an intercalated research degree, qualified from the University of Aberdeen. Mr Haas brings extensive business experience having started, built and now sold out of a successful telecom provider. Together they have the medical knowledge and business acumen to take Pharmacells onto major successes.

     

    Who are our Guest Commentators for the event?

    Bill Matthews of M2M2 will comment on Kelvin Nanotechnology Ltd. Bill Matthews began his diverse career by rising through the ranks at Motorola, from engineer through marketing and operations to the position of Director of Strategy and Systems for a $1B automotive components business. Headhunted into the SME world, Bill spent an interesting 5 years riding boom and bust in VC-backed businesses, before developing a portfolio career. Today Bill is Chair of a NHS Board and a non-exec director on two NDPBs and one core Scottish Government department. He is the founder of M2M2, which combines a music management business with a home for his management consulting activity. Bill has first degrees in Electronics and Psychology and an MBA


    Dr David C Bunton of Biopta will comment on Pharmacells. David is co-founder and CEO of Biopta. An expert in vascular pharmacology, David is a graduate from the University of Glasgow and has a PhD from Glasgow Caledonian University with numerous publications in respiratory and vascular pharmacology. David is a member of the British Pharmacological Society.

    Data protection is an ongoing issue. With more and more information being stored and transferred digitally, there is strong concern amongst the general public for the privacy of their personal details. The remit of the ICO is developing rapidly, and it will have new powers to check and fine from April 2010.

    The public need to be able to trust and have confidence in Scottish public services and other organisations. The Public Service Reform Directorate has recently produced a set of draft Identity Management and Privacy Principles. Following a consultation which ends on 23 November 2009, a report will be published in February 2010, followed by the final Principles for public service delivery organisations in Scotland by early spring 2010.

    All of these issues will be discussed by leading representatives from the public, private and academic sectors at Data Protection Scotland: Respecting Privacy, Building Trust.
