  1. Lunchtime Seminar - What every Investor wants

    The Alba Innovation Centre in partnership with MBM Commercial is presenting a series of lunchtime seminars offering expert advice on several aspects of growing and developing a high growth innovation business.

    This first seminar will answer the question "What are the key things investors look for in a company?" Kenny Mumford, a partner in MBM Commercial, and formally in house lawyer with Braveheart Investments, explains how to make your company irresistible to all types of investors.

  2. Photon 08 Industry and Technology Program

    Sign up for this year’s premier UK photonics exhibition and conference, Photon08.

    We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Industry and Technology Programme at Photon, the UK's premier conference in Optics and Photonics, taking place at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh from 26-29 August this year.

    The ITP is broken down into 3 major exciting themes:-
    Day 1 Growing your company through funding opportunities
    Day 2 UK and Worldwide roadmapping plus photovoltaics for energy production
    Day 3 Future technologies for broadband technology, defence and high power lasers

    The aim of the ITP is to invoke discussion on each session’s main industry focus both at present and also where technology is predicted to head in the next 5-10 years.

    The ITP has been designed to synchronize with the Academic Programme to allow interchange of attendance between parallel sessions.

    In order to promote these discussions we have selectively invited companied from around the UK to present on past successes and the future direction within their industry.

    Attendance at the ITP is £90 a day for UKCPO/IOP members and £120 for non-members.

    Photon (www.photon.org.uk) was hugely successful attracting almost 600 delegates in 2006. It comprises:

    Industry Technology Programme, aimed at engineers & physicists in the photonics industry
    Exhibition of the latest optics and photonics technological innovations
    Biennial conference of the Optics and Photonics Division of the Institute of Physics
    Biennial conference of the Quantum Electronics and Photonics Group of the Institute of Physics.

  3. IP Lunchtime Seminars - Patenting Software

    The first in our 2008/09 series of IP lunchtime seminars.

    Maclay, Murray and Spens in conjunction with Murgitroyds will deliver a workshop on the Why's and Wherefore's of patenting software.

    The key areas that will be examined in this workshop include - what kind of rights a patent gives you, why patenting is right for some companies but not for others, i.e. when is it worth patenting; why investors love them; using patents in negotiations with big companies etc, extent to which software can be patented - contrast in UK / US approach and how this might influence strategy, when to file, strategy and process e.g. use of provisional applications; staging costs etc, importance of well drafted patents and interaction with open standards.
